The People’s Gallery is a friendly community gallery, totally run by volunteers. We promote art made by local artists 🙂
The gallery was first opened in 1996 as a way of enabling amateur and hobbyist artists a platform to show their work in a gallery without having to go through the rigorous selection process that all galleries ask artists to go through and invariably always fail.
The driving force behind the opening were two great local artists, John Kimpton and Chris Cyprus who saw an opportunity of displaying artwork on the empty walls of the local Credit Union on Melbourne Street Stalybridge, they were helped by the manager at the time Stephen Ollerenshaw who has had a lifetimes love of art, through the following years the gallery became bigger than the credit union and so ‘The People’s Gallery’ was born.
How it works
Artists who want to be part of the People’s Gallery have to join, paying a membership (currently) of £25 per year, this entitles them to hang a couple of paintings alongside both amateur and professional artists, we would expect them to change their work over every couple of months or so, this hopefully encourages them to keep on painting.
At the moment we have well over 100 members and growing. We host a one man exhibition every month, not just members but artists from far and wide, professional, amateur, art groups and community groups including schools. If you are interested in becoming a member please contact us on the numbers below or pop in.
How we survive
We are totally self funding, we receive no income from council, government or private patronage. We are a volunteer-led Gallery, no one is paid any fees, we just love to be part of this unique artist group, it really is the People’s Gallery.
